Ukraine v Northern Ireland Euro 2016 Group C Betting Preview

Ukraine and Northern Ireland go head-to-head in a crucial game in Group C, as both look to recover from defeats in their opening games of Euro 2016.

Ukraine suffered an opening game defeat against Germany, but are favourites to win this clash at odds of 3/5 at UniBet.

Mykhaylo Fomenko’s side were beaten 2-0 by world champions Germany in their opening game of Group C. Former-Everton centre-back Shkodran Mustafi headed Joachim Low’s side into the lead on 19 minutes.

Ukraine were not at their best attacking-wise and their best effort on goal came when Jerome Boateng somehow cleared Yevhen Konoplyanka’s effort of the German goal line. That was as good as it got for Ukraine and as they looked for an equaliser, Germany scored a second in stoppage-time through Bastian Schweinsteiger.

The game was always going to be a tough one for Fomenko’s team, but they will be eying a win over Northern Ireland, who are considered the weakest team in the group.

Northern Ireland suffered an opening game lost against Poland, but can be backed at odds of 13/2 at William Hill to redeem themselves with a victory in this clash.

Michael O’Neill’s men were on the back foot for much of the game against the Poles, but only conceded after 51 minutes. Fiorentina winger Jakub Blaszczykowski found Ajax striker Arkadiusz Milik in the area and the forward fired past Craig Cathcart and Michael McGovern in the Northern Ireland goal.

O’Neill’s side struggled to threaten the Polish goal and will need to be more ambitious to get anything out of this game. The defeat also ended Northern Ireland’s 12-game undefeated run.

Past Meetings

These two teams have faced each other on just four occasions, with Ukraine emerging unbeaten by recording two victories and two games finishing in draws.

The first two meetings of the two nations came in qualifying for the 1998 World Cup, when Ukraine claimed a 1-0 win in Belfast and a 2-1 victory in Kiev. The two teams were also paired together in qualifying for the European Championships in 2004, with both encounters finishing goalless.

Team and Selection News

Ukraine may well stick with the same eleven that started against Germany, as they produced a relatively solid display in the first half, although striker Yevhen Seleznyov could be an alternative to Roman Zozulya.

Northern Ireland produced a rather flat attacking display against Poland, so Michael O’Neill may choose to shake things up with the likes of Connor Washington and Jamie Ward available to start after coming off the bench against Poland

Ukraine team line-up:
Pyatov, Fedetskiy, Khacheridi, Rakitskiy, Shevchuk, Anele Ngcongca, Stepanenko, Yarmolenko, Kovalenko, Konoplyanka, Seleznyov

Northern Ireland team line-up:
McGovern, Cathcart, McAuley, Evans, McLaughlin, McNair, Baird, Norwood, Ward, Davis, Lafferty

Betting Tip
Ukraine have a couple of dangerous players in wingers Yevhen Konoplyanka and Andriy Yarmolenko, who will pose a big threat to Northern Ireland. I can see Ukraine just shading this clash to add to the Irish misery.
