Ukraine v Poland Euro 2016 Group C Betting Preview

Two teams who have enjoyed contrasting fortunes at Euro 2016 met on Tuesday in Group C, as Ukraine and Poland clash in Marseille.

Ukraine have lost both of their last at Euro 2016 so far and are underdogs at odds of 16/5 with Betfair to record a win in this clash.

Mykhaylo Fomenko’s side were defeated 2-0 in their last game 2-0 by Northern Ireland, with Gareth McAuley and Niall McGinn grabbing the goals. The game represented a golden opportunity for Ukraine to put themselves into contention for the knockout stages.

Instead they became the first team at the competition to be eliminated. This game will be all about the Ukraine reclaiming some pride after two poor performances in France.

Poland earned a highly creditable goalless draw with world champions Germany last time out and are favourites to win this clash at odds of Evens at Betfair.

Poland will be happy to have collected four points from their opening two games after drawing 0-0 with Germany. There were chances at both ends of the pitch to win the game, but Poland striker Arkadiusz Milik missed the best chance of the game from close range.

A draw or a win is likely to be enough to see Adam Nawalka’s side through to the last 16, with group rivals Germany and Northern Ireland meeting in the other game.

The two clean sheets will have brought great satisfaction to the team, but the Poles will need to be more clinical in front of goal if they are to go much further in the competition.

Past Meetings

The seven meetings between these two teams have been very even with Ukraine winning three times, Poland winning twice and two games finishing in draws.

The two teams met in qualifying for the World Cup in 2002, with Poland doing the double over Ukraine. However, Ukraine got revenge in qualifying for World Cup 2014, winning both of the meetings 1-0 and are now unbeaten in five meetings between the two nations.

Team and Selection News

Ukraine have a fully-fit squad heading into this clash. Boss Mykhaylo Fomenko is likely to make changes with the biggest maybe being up front were Roman Zozulya could come in up front in place of Yevhen Seleznyov.

Poland are without first choice ‘keeper Wojciech Szczesny through injury and Swansea stopper Lukasz Fabianski is likely to continue in goal. However the outfield ten are likely to remain the same after a very creditable performance against Germany last time out.

Possible Ukraine team line-up:
Pyatov, Fedetskyi, Khacheridi, Rakitskiy, Shevchuk, Stepanenko, Ngcongca, Yarmolenko, Kovalenko, Konoplyanka, Zozulya

Possible Poland team line-up:
Fabianski, Piszczek, Glik, Pazdan, Jedrzejczyk, Blaszczykowski, Krychowiak, Maczynski, Grosicki, Milik, Lewandowski

Betting Tip
Ukraine now have little to play for but their pride having suffered defeats in their opening two games and will be desperate to avoid the same feat in this one. However, for me Poland will have enough quality to add to Ukraine’s woes in France and record a victory.
