Baltusrol GC, Springfield, NJ • Purse: $10,000,000

The best golfers in the world will light up the Baltursol Golf Club for the final Major of 2016. This year’s US PGA Championship may have lost some of its sheen with Tiger Woods dropping out but all the top players will be looking to shine at this event.

This is the 98th edition of the tournament and will take place from July 28th – 31st. The field will feature 156 players who will vie for a total prize money of US$ 10.5 million of which the winner pockets $ 1.9 million and 600 FedExCup points. Coming less than two weeks after the conclusion of the British Open, there is no doubt that the US PGA Championship will test the mettle of every player.

The tournament will be played at the Baltusrol Golf Club which has a 121-year-old history. The course has already hosted the 2005 edition and this will be the ninth Major at this famed venue.

At 7,462 yards and a par-score of 70, the course is consistently ranked in the top 100 courses of the PGA Tour. Designed by the famous A.W. Tillinghast in 1922, the Baltusrol Golf Club has a rich history of hosting national Championships.

The beauty of the course lies in its simplicity. There are no crazy greens or testing bunkers that test the players. It is an exceptional golf course that is a solid test of golfing skills with no tricks and long challenging holes.

The signature hole should perhaps be the one on the fourth which at 199 yards plays to a par score of three. The beautiful hole plays across the largest water hazard on the property.
The attractive view of the reflective water and the stately clubhouse from behind the green make this one of the most impressive structures in golf. Along with this, there are other challenging holes like the 13th – which provides a creek that crosses diagonally across the fairway and the 17th – a beast at 647 yards.

The field for this year is led by the top four golfers in the world – Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy. Day has been the most consistent player in the top three and is a defending champion here.

Naturally, he is counted among the favourites to win the Championship this year. Odds of 8/1 with Betfair make him the bookies’ favourite to emerge victorious.
McIlroy had a good run-in to the tournament and his performance at Royal Troon should give him confidence. Odds of 8/1 with Betfair make him joint-favourite – watch out for a steady tournament from the Irish. Johnson has had a consistent 2016 so far and should be a threat to everyone – odds of 16/1 with Betfair make him an underdog. Of the rest, keep an eye on Phil Mickelson who is easily a fans favourite here. He was the winner of the last edition of the PGA Championship (2005) when Baltusrol last played host to the event. Odds of 28/1 with Betfair make him a rank outsider for the title. Can the affable American repeat his heroics? Or will it be between the top four rankers only?

Golf Tips For The US PGA Championship

We once again go for Dustin Johnson to win the US PGA Championship this week as he is the form horse for the past month or more. At the time of posting Dustin was well positioned to win the RBC Canadian Open lying 2nd going in to the final round. He is co favourite with Rory Mcilroy and Jason Day at 8/1 with most bookies. Mcilroy has been striping the ball recently and but for his putting in the Open would have finished a comfortable 3rd to Phil Mickelson and first time major winner Henrik Stenson. He has to feature but may fall just short once again. Watch out though if he does start to putt well again.

Another one going well in the Canadian Open at time of posting is our other tip Matt Kuchar. He lies T6 going in to the final round just three shots behind leader Brandt Snedeker. For some crazy reason he is marked up at odds of 50/1 with most bookmakers. That is a bigger price than he should be especially if he goes on to win this weekend. So Kuchar is our second tip and can be backed at 50/1 with Ladbrokes. New accounts can get a £50 Free Bet* using promo code F50.

For our outsider to win the US PGA we will go for a bit of british beef. Known affectionately as “Beef” or “Beefy” Andrew Johnston captivated his worldwide audience with his exploits in The Open when finishing 8th. He was at one stage early in his final round up to 3rd with early birdies but fell away slightly on the back nine. He is sure to have his fans in America calling his name and this will only spur him on to do well. He did make the cut in the extremely difficult US Open earlier in the year his first event on American soil. We have a sneaky feeling he will do very well and at the odds of 250/1 on offer at Unibet and the six places to boot, we will have a few shillings on him. A couple of others to mention are americans Kevin Chappell and Zach Johnson. Chappell has been the model of consistency this years which see’s him 8th in the FedEx Cup standings and with three second place finishes this season, could this be the week. Zach put in a fine performance in defending his title at the Open last week and will be keen to get the third leg of the grand slam of majors. Decent each way shot.
