Valero Texas Open Preview, Tips and Odds

Congratulations to Wesley Bryan on his first PGA Tour win when just pipping or tip Luke Donald by one shot at the RBC Heritage. We still got some nice place odds on Donald finishing second which meant we had second places on both tours last week. How’s your luck, hopefully we can go one spot better and with that said this week’s PGA Tour golf tips come from the Valero Texas Open.

Venue & Prize Fund at the Valero Texas Open
TPC San Antonio – AT&T Oaks, San Antonio, TX • Purse: $6,200,000

The majority of the top players on tour decided to have last week off after the Masters, missing the RBC Heritage. Some of them return this week in what looks set to be a competitive Valero Texas Open. Then first and second from last year, Charley Hoffman and Patrick Reed both return and although Hoffman will no doubt want to keep his crown, it is Reed that interests me this week.

The course used for the Texas Open is the TPC San Antonio, a tough par 72 that punishes any wayward shots. The fairways are narrow, the bunkers are deep and the rough is full of unplayable lies, everything you need to make things interesting. Accuracy is the name of the game and course form will also help here this week.

Patrick Reed has that and as well as finishing second here last year, he also managed a top 20 finish on his other visit. The San Antonio native would be a hugely popular hometown winner of this event and plenty of fans will be there to root for him no doubt. Reed is a player that loves emotion and should he be in contention on Sunday with the crowd behind him, he will be very difficult to stop.

What Reed does need to do to win here is rediscover his good form from earlier in the season. A 6th at the SBS Tournament of Champions, 12th at the CareerBuilder Challenge and 23rd at the AT&T Pebble Beach represent his best this season, and certainly good enough to get involved here. However, he has missed the cut on his last two outings, including at the Masters and needs to quickly put that out of his head here this week. It is all about confidence and momentum for Reed, a good first round would put him right into contention and give him the lift he needs for the weekend’s play.

Elsewhere there are a couple of other players worth keeping an eye on for very different reasons this week. Ian Poulter is on the last week of his medical exemption card and needs to secure a good finish here to accumulate enough prize money to win his card for the rest of the season. He was third going into the weekend last week at the RBC Heritage, but fell away and slipped down the leaderboard on the final two days. He certainly has the game, and the need, to trouble the scorers here this week but needs to put together four good rounds instead of two or three like he has been doing this season.

Matt Kuchar is our last tip for the Texas Open this week and although he starts as favourite his odds of 18/1 with Paddypower smacks us as being overpriced. He finished like a train last week to finish T11. That followed a T4 at The Masters where he also finished strong with a 67 which included that wonderful hole in one. If he can just sort out the two middle rounds he could run away with this tournament. Place your bet’s with Paddypower this week to get 7 places. Curtis Luck, the US Amateur Champion makes his professional debut this week, fresh from playing four rounds at the Masters. He leaves his amateur status as the number one amateur and although I don’t think he will be anywhere near this weekend, he is worth keeping an eye on for the future.
