Wales v Slovakia Euro 2016 Group B Preview

Two European Championship debutants clash on Saturday evening in Bordeaux, as Wales face Slovakia in Group B of Euro 2016.

Wales have never appeared at European Championship finals in its current guise, although the Dragons did make the quarter-finals of the competition in a different format back in 1976, when only four teams made the finals.

Chris Coleman’s team made it to France by finishing second in Group B behind Belgium and are slight favourites to win this one at odds of 9/5 with Betfair. A feature of Wales qualification campaign was their stingy defence, as the Dragons conceded just four goals in their ten qualifiers.

A record of 11 goals scored was not great though, so their defensive record could prove imperative in their progression to the knockout stages. Wales star in qualifying was Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale who scored seven times in qualification.

Slovakia are taking part in their first ever European Championship finals as an independent nation, although they did take part in three while part of Czechoslovakia. Jan Kozak’s team are slight underdogs for the win in this clash at odds of 2/1 with Ladbrokes.

The Eastern European country qualified second behind European champions Spain in Group C. Their qualification was built on winning their first six group games, which included a 2-1 win over the Spanish, which was the world champions first defeat in qualifying in nine years.

Napoli attacking midfielder Marek Hamsik played a key part in Slovakia’s qualification, scoring five times and he will be looking to replicate that form in France.

Past Meetings

There has only been two past meetings between these two at international level, which both came in qualification for Euro 2008. They resulted in a 5-1 win for Slovakia in Cardiff, before the Welsh won 5-2 in the reverse fixture.

The game in Cardiff was significant as Bale scored his first international goal and became his country’s goalscorer aged just 17 years, two months and 22 days.

Team and Selection News

Bale is obviously the stand out star for Chris Coleman’s team, but the likes of centre-back Ashley Williams and midfielder Aaron Ramsey are also expected to play a key role for the Welsh in France. Crystal Palace midfielder Joe Ledley has made the squad after recovering from a leg fracture.

Slovakia have a few faces and names familiar to British football fans. Liverpool centre-back Martin Skrtel is a key player at the heart of the defence, while former-Everton ‘keeper Jan Mucha is likely to warm the bench. Former-Manchester City Vladimir Weiss could be a crucial part of Slovakia’s attacking efforts.

Possible Wales team line-up: Hennessey, Gunter, Williams, Chester, Taylor, Allen, Ledley, Robson-Kanu, Ramsey, Bale, Vokes

Possible Slovakia team line-up: Kozacik, Pekarik, Skrtel, Durica, Hubocan, Pecosky, Kucka, Weiss, Hamsik, Mak, Nemec

Betting Tips

Heading into this clash it is all to play for between these two teams, with Wales just edging it in the betting. This game could be decided by whether Bale or Hamsik has the better game. For me these two teams could very well cancel each other out and begin their campaign with a point apiece.
