Quail Hollow Club, Charlotte, NC • Purse: $7,300,000

Quail Hollow will be the centre of attention for one final year as the Wells Fargo tournament tees-off on May 5th. Starting from 2017, the PGA Championship will come to Quail Hollow in August while the Wells Fargo will make way and move to Wilmington’s Eagle Point Golf Club. The total purse on offer for the tournament is US $ 7.3 million of which the winner will pocket a cool $ 1.31 million and 500 FedExCup points.

The legendary Quail Hollow Club measures 7, 575 yards and has a par-score of 72. The course was designed in 1961 by the famous architect George Cobb with upgrades from Arnold Palmer and Tom Fazio.

Ever since its return to the PGA Tour schedule in 2003, the tournament has grown from strength to strength. It has always been a players’ favourite and the move to be a major championship venue as next year’s host of PGA Championship will propel it into the big league.

The course was the original site of the Kemper Open (1969-79) and later the World Seniors Invitational (1980-89) before Fazio added his touch to redo the greens. The course has always been a testing ground for the players and the final three holes, which were dubbed as the “Green Mile” are considered to be one of the toughest closing stretches on the Tour.

There are no changes to the course but once the tournament ends, three holes on the front nine (first, second and fifth) will undergo alterations for the 2017 PGA Championship here.

Coming to the field, although the top two players (Jason Day and Jordan Spieth) are not participating, six of the world’s top ten will be in action at the Quail Hollow for this edition.

In addition, there are 10 of the top 20 players in the world taking part in this year’s tournament, which makes it a very competitive field. World number three and two-time defending champion Rory McIlroy will lead the strong field which also contains 2013 champion Rickie Fowler, Henrik Stenson, Adam Scott, Dustin Johnson and Justin Rose.

Adding the local flair will be 22-year-old Bryson DeChambeau who has impressed with a tied fourth finish at Hilton Head in his first tournament after turning professional. Phil Mickelson will be making his 12th consecutive appearance at Quail Hollow.

Although he’s never won the tournament, he has eight top-10 finishes. But, the excitement around Tiger Woods is over as the former World number one wouldn’t be playing this weekend.

Last year saw McIlroy win comprehensively by a seven-shot margin making him the first two-time winner of the event. This is definitely a course in which he feels very comfortable going by his 72-hole scoring record and two best 18-hole scores. He also has three other top-10 finishes at this venue and should be looking for a third triumph this year.

No Tiger Woods…no Jordan Spieth….no Jason Day…but no problem! The field at the Wells Fargo Championship 2016 is good enough to give a fitting finale for the tournament at Quail Hollow. Don’t miss the action!

Golf Tips For The Wells Fargo Championship

With Day and Spieth the not in action it falls to Rory Mcilroy to take the favourites tag. Although the results have not gone the way he would like he is defending champion when winning by 7 shots from Patrick Rodgers. He shot a fabulous 61 in round three in finishing with a four round total of 267. we believe this will be the stepping stone to greater things and see Mcilroy taking the title once  more.

Recommended Betting Tip

Rory Mcilroy to win The Wells Fargo Championship 9/2 – 4pt win

Phil Mickleson has a decent enough record in this event and just about represents value at odds of 28/1. He currently stands 26th in The FedEx Cup standings and already has three top tens in ten events. These include a runner up and a third place at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and CareerBuilder Challenge

Phil Mickleson to win The Wells Fargo Championship 28/1 – 2pts each way

It’s value time again and our search for an outsider goes to Brian Stuard winner last week at The Zurich Classic of New Orleans. That was his first PGA tour title and for some reason Coral bookmakers are going 250/1 where others are going 125/1. Lightning to strike twice we hope so.
