The Zurich Classic takes place this weekend and sees team golf return to the PGA Tour for the first time in 3 and half decades. The tournament has created plenty of buzz, like any different type of golf does and it will be fascinating to see how the players cope with switching to a different format.

The tournament will be played by two man teams over four days, with alternate shot format being played on Thursday and Saturday, and best ball format played on Friday and Sunday. The course itself works through the Louisiana wetlands and has five further ponds and 100 bunkers added in to increase the challenge it poses.

In total, 12 of the top 25 ranked players will take part this week, with the two pairings of Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson and Jason Day and Rickie Fowler being the only pairings with both players in the top 25. Jordan Spieth plays with Ryan Palmer, while the South African duo of Branden Grace and Louis Oosthuizen also form a potentially deadly duo. Two big hitters, Bubba Watson and J.B Holmes play together and they are just some of the exciting partnerships on show this week in what looks set to be a fun, and very intriguing week of golf.

The pair I am most interested in this week is Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson. With the tournament having an unusual format, to me, it makes sense to stick with players who are used to playing with each other, and these two have of experience doing that. They have played together in the Ryder Cup and shown a liking for foursomes and fourball play in that event. That should stand them in good stead for this week’s different event, giving them an advantage on many others in the field.

Rose comes here playing for the first time since his second in the Masters where he lost to Sergio Garcia in a playoff. I’d normally be wary of backing a player after such a disappointment but it doesn’t concern me with Rose as I know he is a strong character. I expect him to be raring to go and wanting to prove a point after the heartbreaking loss and that should result in him playing very well this weekend. Having Henrik Stenson by his side will also help him a great deal. Prior to the Masters, Rose was in tremendous form and has another second place finish and two fourth place finishes to his name this season.

Stenson also returns to action for the first time since the Masters, although he missed the cut at Augusta. He has missed the cut in his last three tournaments and has not been himself since withdrawing from the World Golf Championships in Mexico at the beginning of March. He is, however, a class act and will no doubt get back on track soon, this different style of tournament could be what brings him back to life. If he does get going then I can see his partnership with Rose being a formidable, unstoppable one.

Who else can make an impact, well I think that the pairing of Daniel Berger and Thomas Pieters looks a powerful combination. With both players showing good form in recent weeks they could easily defy their odds. Pieters is right back to his best and his T4 at The Masters this year shows what he is capable and with Berger by his side will be strong contenders alongside Rose and Stenson.
